The Music: Dinah Washington – Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

I was quite young when I first heard Dinah Washington’s version of Smoke Gets In Your Eyes…
At the time the smoke metaphor went completely over my head but lyrics such as ‘laughing friends deride, tears I cannot hide’ sung by the Queen of Blues herself caught my full attention.
I’m no music critic so I can’t fully describe all the wonderful qualities of a voice like Dinah Washington’s but to speak from my own personal experience I can only say that for me it holds a dreamy quality that makes listening to her a truly enjoyable experience and this song one of my favourites.
