How to do the splits

Have you seen House of Flying Daggers? I have. Haven’t watched it in a while actually but last Sunday we had some friends and family over and it seemed like a good choice… little did I know that a single scene would inspire a new challenge for 2013…

My goodness! That leg extension! I watched this scene and was immediately struck by the injustice that I am currently incapable of such things! So, to remedy this situation I have set myself a little challenge… to master the splits!

I say little, but let’s be clear, this is a very serious challenge for 3 key reasons:

  1. I cannot touch my toes
  2. I cannot touch my ankles
  3. I can barely touch my knees

OK, perhaps points 2 and 3 are an exaggeration (point 2 more of a partial exaggeration) but the truth remains that I am quite inflexible when it come to my legs. Hamstrings are way too tight for my liking and it’s about time I did something about them. No, there’s no huge benefits to being able to do the splits; as far as i know it doesn’t lower cholesterol or reduce the risk of heart disease but for my own life ambitions, entertainment and to add to the number of tricks I have up my sleeve; extra flexibility and suppleness is a must.


This is the first question that struck me after this little lightbulb went off in my head. So I headed straight to google (because it of course knows everything) and typed “Can I still learn how to do the splits in my 30s?!?”

Thankfully I was encouraged that a) it was not too late and b) a number of others are attempting the same thing. So newly informed that my joints still have room for manouvre I launched the initiative I’ve come to call…


GOAL: To master the side split in 6 months. According to 43 things this challenge is often completed in 3 months so 6 months should be do-able

METHOD: 5 minute warmup. 15 minutes of stretching every evening; working my hamstring, hips, groin and other bits.

ROUTINE: After my warm up my stretch routine is basically a pick and mix from two youtube videos (embedded below) and a wikihow page. My routine includes all the common elements between the 3 sources that seem to be the standard for splits stretching e.g. the forward lunge stretch; as well as a few that I personally preferred, the butterfly stretch, splits against the wall stretch etc. Overall I’ve picked a mix of 7 stretch positions which I hold for 60 seconds each.

So that’s the plan. Currently if I attempt the splits I’m about 2 feet of the ground so I have some way to go. But hopefully in time I’ll have a before and after picture I can be proud of…

    A few years ago I realised I couldn’t touch my toes so I started stretching everyday and within a short time I was doing it with ease. I reckon you’ll do it in under 6 months easy :)

      Welcome aboard Urbanglamgyrl :D This is going to be awesome and as Delali mentioned above, if we stick to it we should see some great progress in 3 months let alone 6.
