There is something very wrong with X-factor this year. Last year I had a great deal of fun tweeting about the unfolding hilarity from the performances and judges but something about this week’s show in particular has left a very bad taste in my mouth which I felt compelled to discuss:

1: What is X factor?

When judging anyone else except for Wagner Louis’ quick to point out that this is a singing competition? Is it really? Then why put Wagner through?

He’s a lovely person I’m sure but can he sing? In tune even? No. To even call the show X-Factor when the judges are so willing to put such acts through is a gross misrepresentation in my opinion. The public is obviously being misinformed as to what this show is about, shouldn’t we have the right to formally complain? Where’s the TV version of the ASA?

2: Crowd control

I don’t generally object to audience participation but I find the decision to let the crowd rage at undefined volumes completely bizaare. Am I not meant to care what the judges say? If that’s the case why not just replace them all with a crowd-o-meter and let us decide on whether or not an act has done well based on the boos and cheers of the crowd. It’s all I can hear anyway.

3: Hostile takeover

A bit of heated banter between the judges was always a little entertaining but everyone seeming increasingly stressed and a tad vitriolic this season. Judges attacking contestants, acts attacking judges, contestants attacking the show itself and poor Dermot trying to keep the peace. It just seems to be getting worse and more distasteful by the week.

I’d much rather the days when I was left feeling excited by Leona’s incredible range and Alexandra’s amazing stamina to dance and sing like a pro. X-Factor use to leave me feeling entertained and happy. Now I just find it all annoying and unpleasant especially as all the surrounding drama is overshadowing what’s meant to be important… the acts.

4: Katie and Wagner

2 contestants who have had to face several weeks of public humiliation. The judges blame the public. The contestants blame the press and I blame the judges.

Wagner should never have been on the show in the first place and each time a contestant leaves instead of Wagner I hope Louis feels the weight of his decision. Why Louis put him on the show I will never understand and what’s worse is that the judges then show such disdain for Wagner in their critiques. Of course he’s not good but it’s not his fault he’s there either. It’s Louis’ so if you’re going to boo anyone boo him.

As for Katie, she should have been let go in the first instance instead of this attempt by the judges to force people into liking her. I’m not saying she’s a bad person or that she can’t sing, I even like her new hair cut but she’s not my cup of tea. And usually that’s all it comes down to when people decide whether or not they’re going to support an artist. Don’t judge us for it. I don’t know Mariah either but I’ll be playing All I Want for Christmas right though to January 1.

Katie and the judges should see the viewing public as that old adage “if you love someone set them free if it’s meant to be they’ll come back”. Set the audience free judges! Next time she’s in the bottom 2 let her go home. Stop with all the begging and pleading and just let her go and grow and come back to a more forgiving public.

5: Who’s this show really about?

So much of this show doesn’t make sense to me. Especially Simon with his new found love of mediocre. There was a time when Simon’s opinion was one you can trust but I think it’s fair to say that ever since the Jedward debacle last year it’s become evident that his judgement has been greatly compromised.

With that and the way the careers of some of the winners has disappeared into oblivion we have to ask who is this show really about? The contestants or the judges? When all the contestants are long forgotten, the judges return year after year.

Are they just putting on a show to confirm their seat for the following year, with each controversy, cat fight and teary-eyed contestant working in their favour? Sounds cynical I know but I see no other explanation for what has taken place. Why is talent being looked over in favour of comedy value in what is meant to be a “singing competition”?

Why are subsequent winners given corny cover songs whilst so-called “losers” actually get their own identities cultivated and quality songs/videos recorded?

And so…

I’m sure all the publicity courted by the controversy is probably helping to line a few people’s pockets but it’s starting to look like the shows heading in the direction of cultivating that kind of activity on purpose.

X Factor’s had some good years but if it keeps going in this direction it might have to go on without me. Truly I wouldn’t even miss the show if it weren’t for my Twitter family who have made it so entertaining to watch but no worries, we can giggle over the Apprentice instead.

Here she takes on an Ella Fitzgerald numbers and delivers it with such class, I’m almost quite upset. I mean imagine how much more entertaining X Factor’s big band week could have been if we had talent like this on the show?

To avoid Valentine’s Day having the same effect on single people as a full moon does on werewolves here are my top 10 tracks we should avoid like the plague. Think of it as a musical survival kit for the uncoupled on V-Day.

Top 10 Songs Single People Should Not Listen To On Valentine’s Day

1: All By Myself – Celine Dion (and later by Leona Lewis on X Factor). Even on a happy day this is a bad idea.
2: On My Own – Patti Labelle and Michael McDonald. I don’t care for the 1% attempt at positivity at the end, the other 99% is pure depression.
3: It Hurts Like Hell – Aretha Franklin. Courtesy of twitter buddy and fellow blogger OhLovelyInga. I don’t know this song personally but with a title like that I have no intention of getting familiar with it either.
4: Until You Come Back To Me – Aretha Franklin (and later by Katherine McPhee on American Idol). Ordinarily I love this song but on Valentine’s day it could perhaps encourage stalker like tendencies.
5: Congratulations – Vesta. I’d never heard this song before and for good reason. V-day or not I’d have to carry out an intervention on anyone I caught listening to it. Thanks to thehaitianqueen on twitter for the warning.
6: Love Don’t Live Here Anymore – Rose Royce. Oh it’s so haunting! Thanks to twitter buddy misssmith11 for this suggestion
7: Bust Your Windows – Jazmine Sullivan. Angry enough to make any girl do something stupid. Don’t let this one send you over the edge people. Thanks again to missmith11 for this one.
8: Love – Keisha Cole. If you love your sanity stay far away from this song. You have been warned.
9: I Who Have Nothing – Shirley Bassey (and later by Jordin Sparks on American Idol). Even Simon Cowell wanted to jump of a bridge after this rendition. Don’t do it to yourself people.
10: Single Ladies – Beyonce. So you put your hand up, did a little two step and flashed your ring finger. Still single? I thought so.

Now take a deep breath everybody. I know that was hard but we are now moving on to the happier portion of this post…

Top 10 Songs Single People Should Listen To On Valentine’s Day.

1: Golden – Jill Scott. This song is a serious dose of happy, I’m surprised it’s available without prescription.
2: Carl Carlton – She’s a Bad Mama Jama. Something to get your strut on to, plus the video’s a giggle.
3: Fine – Mary J. Blige. Fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine whoooo. Enough said really.

4:That Thing – Lauryn Hill. A lot of wise lyrics to keep you focused on what’s important.

5: Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough – Michael Jackson. Who cares what the lyrics say this song is all about dancing.
6: Sir Duke – Stevie Wonder. I thought this song was officially called You Can Feel It All Over but no, it’s Sir Duke. You learn a new thing everyday.
7: Here Comes The Sun – Nina Simone. To remind you that every cloud has a silver lining.
8: Lively Up Yourself - Bob Marley. If you are feeling moody, this song is like having a parent telling you to fix up. What else can you do but obey.
9: Survivor – Destiny’s Child. Even if it’s just for the joke you catch impersonating Michelle in the lifeboat. Survive, what!
10: Le Freak – Chic. So if none of the above works and you really must freak out, why not do it to this.

And with that, I wish you all a Happy Valentine’s Day!

Records have been broken, remarkable achievements accomplished and history made.

So below I’ve selected my top 10 events for 2008 that have either sparked my interest or completely floored me.

January 2008
- Disney begin work on a new film to be released in 2009 featuring their first ever black princess, The Princess and The Frog.

June 2008
- Former Manchester United football player, Paul Ince becomes the first black man to be in charge of a premier league team (Yay!). Unfortunately, a series of poor match results for the already troubled Blackburn Rovers see him dismissed just six months later (Booo!).

July 2008
- Tennis player, Venus Williams wins the Women’s singles against her sister, Serena, at Wimbledon. Fortunately, all must have been forgiven by the time the doubles competition came around as they both worked fantastically well together in winning the lot.

August 2008
- Jamaican sprinter Usain “Lightening” Bolt thrills us with his super speed and wins the world records for the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay with his team mates.
- Christine Ohorougo wins a gold medal for the 400m at the Beijing Summer Olympics and in doing so becomes the first British female to become an Olympic champion in that race.

October 2008
- Film director, Tyler Perry opens the first black-owned production studio.
- A young woman with a crazy need to share all the things she enjoys most in her life starts a blog, Harlem Loves, and is pleasured to find others from around the world who appreciate some of her interests

November 2008
- At the Brazilian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton becomes the youngest driver and the first black man to win the Formula One World Championship.
- Barack Obama achieves the seemingly impossible and wins the US general election to become the country’s first black president.

December 2008
- The superbly talented Alexandra Burke beats off the competition and scores a duet with Beyonce before winning the X Factor.

PS: I feel like I’ve missed something? What do you think?

Team Alexandra have proved ourselves victorious as Alexandra is most deservedly crowned the X Factor winner for 2008…

Even Simon Cowell was gobsmacked as Alexandra gave outstanding performance after outstanding performance.

The musical highlight for me was her duet with Beyonce, though up until tonight there was a huge question mark over whether or not it would have even taken place. I think we have to thank a great X Factor PR team for their ability to keep us in suspense like that.

I don’t normally vote for these things but I had to pick up a phone for Alexandra and she was more than worth every penny. If you have any doubts, you can watch the video below which I’m sure will firmly lay them to rest.

Alexandra and Beyonce – Listen

PS: Did anyone else pick up on Simon’s not too subtle fanaticism for Alexandra even when he was meant to be Eoghan’s mentor? Could it be that Simon’s more loyal to true talent than dodgy record sales? Perhaps I’d be inclined to think so if it wasn’t for the huge dollar signs in his eyes every time he looked at Alexandra.

PPS: After Alexandra won, a friend on Facebook changed his status to: “Alexandra just done a Halle Berry at the Oscars”. I had to laugh

Team Alexandra still going strong!

I’ve just watched the X-Factor and our girl Alexandra did us so proud. Not only did she smash Toxic but her rendition of Beyonce’s Listen was tremendous. If she’s not in the final then I will seriously question the sanity of the British public.

Initially I was hoping for an Alexandra/Diana combo for the finals but Ruth’s powerhouse performances are starting to sway me in her direction. I definitely think the “Rock-a-rita” is making her presence known with her emotionally charged sing-offs.

My hopes for the results show are Eoghan or JLS to go. I don’t know what Louis was thinking about with JLS singing Hit me baby one more time and I’m so allergic to High School Music-urgh, Eoghan’s performance was like nails on a blackboard.

TEAM ALEXANDRA TO WIN!

Post result show update:

Nooooooooooooooooooo! How could JLS and Eoghan survive? How could Ruth go? And why was Louis looking so upset? Could the guilt of forcing such bad talent on us have overwhelmed him? Either way, I guess I’m back to my original plan… Diana and Alexandra for the final!

And yes I paused to cross my arms X Factor stylee after I wrote that.

Can I just say I have been TEAM ALEXANDRA since her first audition (Alex to win!), I warmed up to Diana Vickers after her second but was a little worried about Laura White after her drunken Amy Winehouse impersonation at boot camp.

Fortunately my worries were firmly laid to rest in week one when I was pleasantly surprised by her Alicia Keys song and she absolutely blew me away with her jazzy number on Big Band week so how comes the bookies’ and Danni’s favourite was voted off tonight?

Seriously, can anyone tell me how she could leave before Eoghan and JLS?
