I do love it but I’d love to see a spread that captured the romantic or whimsical side of black beauty. We go hard edged, super sexy or brilliantly bold but we can also do classical dreamy elegance. I think that’s why I love Vlisco so much for showing that side.

Anyway, that aside bravo Vogue Italia especially for featuring those full and fabulous fros. Harlem Loves salutes you!

Both Vogue Italia’s black issue by editor Franca Sozzani and photographer Steven Meisel, and the Obama hope poster by Stephen Fairey have received the Brit Insurance Design Award 2009 for fashion and graphics, respectively.

On Vogue Italia the judges comented: “The issue has undoubtedly raised questions amongst consumers and critics as to how casting agencies and other fashion promoters include non-white models in their portfolios and magazines, as it’s now proven that ‘black’ does sell.”

Regarding the Obama poster they said: “Just as the presidential candidate’s campaign speeches recaptured the lost art of oratory, so this poster breathed new life into a form that had lost its purpose… The poster did its job by becoming a collector’s item. More than that it’s encapsulated the mood of its time.”

Overall, the winning entries represented a snapshot of contemporary design and demonstrated the role that design plays at a global level. All the winning pieces and others who made the shortlist and are currently on show at the Design Museum until 14 June.

In addition to her recent status upgrade (I can never say that word without hearing Beyonce), Mrs Obama is now rumoured to be joining the ranks of that other fashionable First Lady, Jackie Kennedy.

So much so, that she is being fought over by Essence, Ebony and Vogue magazines who are all hungry to have her on the cover of their January editions in time for the inauguration.

Stephanie D. Smith at WWD Media said: “Despite Vogue’s best efforts, Ebony might get to the Obamas beforehand — the Chicago-based title is quickly assembling a special January issue dedicated to Barack Obama’s candidacy.

“… Essence is also said to be working on a special package for its January issue, but details have not been hammered out.”

All I know is whichever one it is, I’ll be buying it!
