Here’s a cute idea. A book with pre-perforated corners to allow you to mark where you are, with grid paper on the inside and apparently the same card used to stiffen collars on the outside…

Official blurb:

“Hum is a collaborative line of stationery from design firm Graf and stationery makers Hightide. The project initially began as a custom made line for use within the Graf company, but they eventually decided that it would be a waste not to share it with everyone else.
Subtitled “quality to create fresh ideas in daily life”, each product is designed to help you ‘think, catch, draw or stock’ – the process by which creative ideas are produced. The vivid colours are energizing and inspiring, and every last detail is geared to propel your ideas forward.

In Japanese “hum-hum” means, roughly, “oh yes, i see”, and implies a bit of thoughtful chin-rubbing. That meaning is combined with the English “to hum”, the significance of which comes from one of the designers at Graf who always starts humming when things are going well at his desk.”

Check out the Yaginoyama site if you can… it’s very cool.

It’s ridiculous how much stationery makes me happy and almost impressive how nerdy I can get about it…

The good news (if you don’t mind living in a world of nerdy stationery junkies) is that I’m not alone. Just recently I was reminiscing with one of my gal pals on how much we used to love fountain pens back in the day. A Parker fountain pen with no less than 4 different colour cartridges was a sign of immense stationery status at school… as well as evidence of early stationery addiction I guess but it’s too late now…

Anyway it continues happily with the sight of these ‘Fill In The Blank’ Card Set by These are Things who have this to say about them:

Say exactly what’s on your mind with this set of six letterpressed greeting cards. Grab a pen and customize each card to your liking.

Printed rich black ink on beautiful white French Paper 100# Sweet Tooth paper and packaged in an adorable red and white striped vintage candy bag perfect for gifting.

Yes! You read right. I’m about to post about a wedding invitation that is a record player… made of paper. A-maz-ing and gorgeous too…

This beautiful piece of design genius was created by a Ms Kelli Anderson. Here’s what she had to say about the project:

I just finished up a really fun project—a paper record player wedding invitation! In the booklet-style invitation, a bit of paper-folding amplifies the sound of a sewing needle moving along the grooves of a flexidisc record. The hand-spun record yields a garbled, but scrutable listening of a original song by the couple. It requires a bit of tinkering and folding —effectively championing the inner science-nerd kid in the recipient. The whole thing serves as an interactive packaging for the song—which can be experienced on the paper record player, unscrewed + set on a regular turntable, or enjoyed online (for the non-nerds and/or audiophiles out there.

See it in action in the video below:

Now even a stationery junkie like myself had to take a moment to consider what kind of mind calls a calendar “Cats Let Nothing Darken Their Roar”…

…but after one look at these gorgeously designed pieces and I have to think it’s a very clever mind indeed.

As the blurb from their site explains the calendar “is printed in four colours on matt paper, and comes with its signature black ribbon binding. This year, to celebrate its fifth anniversary, it will be available in a special large 50 x 70 cm size as well as in its standard A3 format, each in a numbered edition of 500.”

I couldn’t find any details on pricing but you can register your interest in placing an order from their catchily named website: www.catsletnothingdarkentheirroar.com.

This ingenious calendar is beyond cool. I love it!

Spanish designer, Oscar Diaz explains how his calendar works: “The ink is absorbed slowly, and the numbers in the calendar are ‘printed’ daily.

“One a day, they are filled with ink until the end of the month. A calendar self-updated, which enhances the perception of time passing and not only signaling it.”

It’s just pure artistic genius. Oscar Diaz I salute you and I’m in love with your calendar.

This little paper bound gem comes courtesy of the.

No longer are we forced to choose between the two styles, and yes I am purposely ignoring plain paper (my handwriting runs amok without linear guidance) but with this notebook we get the best of both worlds.

Together at last, grids and lines… maths and english… graphs and notes… design and poetry… I’d better stop now except to say they come in a pack of 3 and cost $9.50 from Doane Paper.

Admittedly, I had spied it for myself but what is Christmas all about if not to give selflessly.

For someone who tends to be able to quickly produce a notebook when needed but am often left scrambling for a pen, a notebook with pencil holder included is a dream come true.

I purchased my one from the Tate Modern shop but you can also buy online at Suck UK. £7.50 for the large and £5.00 for the small.

I’ve restarted this sentence several times trying to explain how much I love this notebook and at the risk of sounding like a four year old, the only thing I could think of was: “I love this notebook a whole gazillion, trillion, billion bunch”.

I salute Retro To Go for this find and those interesting in purchasing this paper bound gem can visit the Design Museum Shop.

The books are hardcovered and costs £8.95 for the small version (ruled or plain) and £11.95 for the large.

Recently, I was promoted at work (yay!) but that has also meant me moving desks and losing my wonderful view of the outside world (boo!)…

So to compensate for the lack of visual stimuli, I decided to perk up my desk with some stationery and homely details.

But first I have to confess, my name is Harlem and I am a stationery junkie. As a child, every opportunity I had to visit my mum’s work place involved me celebrating the opening of her stationery cupboard like it was Toys r Us.

As if my mum’s workplace wasn’t enough, a trip to the post office would practically have me bouncing off the walls. I was not happy until I’d grabbed a copy of every form and stuck every available sticker on something entirely inappropriate. And you don’t even want to get me started on the marvel that a pen on a chain could present to a three-year old.

Today I’d like to say my tastes have refined somewhat and it was a true pleasure to browse through various stationery providers till I finally came across the one that has provided my desk with the necessary delights.

Her name? Emma Bridgewater the maker of “some of the nicest little things in your kitchen…”. The stationery seems to be a recent venture but means you can find a range of wonderfully decorated items from polka dotted pottery to cartoon calendars.

Personally, being the type who loves motivational quotes, I fell for the Black Toast and Marmalade collection (as on notebook set pictured above) and take great pleasure in being reminded by my expander file that I am “really well organised” or at least will be… one day.
