Aloe Blacc – The Man

Slightly obsessed with the visuals from Aloe Blacc’s new video for The Man. The Mathew Cullen directed video sees Aloe Blacc paying tribute to some of history’s iconic men, including Marvin Gaye, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.

Lyrics

Well you can tell everybody
Yeah you can tell everybody
Go ahead and tell everybody
I’m the man, I’m the man, I’m the man
Yes I am, yes I am, yes I am
I’m the man, I’m the man, I’m the man

I believe every lie that I ever told
Paid for every heart that I ever stole
I played my cards and I didn’t fold
Well it ain’t that hard when you got soul (this is my world)

Somewhere I heard that life is a test
I been though the worst but I still give my best
God made my mould different from the rest
Then he broke that mould so I know I’m blessed (this is my world)

Stand up now and face the sun
Won’t hide my tail or turn and run
It’s time to do what must be done
Be a king when kingdom comes

Well you can tell everybody
Yeah you can tell everybody
Go ahead and tell everybody
I’m the man, I’m the man, I’m the man x 2
Yes I am, yes I am, yes I am
I’m the man, I’m the man, I’m the man

I got all the answers to your questions
I’ll be the teacher you could be the lesson
I’ll be the preacher you be the confession
I’ll be the quick relief to all your stressin’ (this is my world)

It’s a thin line between love and hate
Is you really real or is you really fake
I’m a solider standing on my feet
No surrender and I won’t retreat (this is my world)

Stand up now and face the sun
Won’t hide my tail or turn and run
It’s time to do what must be done
Be a king when kingdom comes

Well you can tell everybody
Yeah you can tell everybody
Go ahead and tell everybody
I’m the man, I’m the man, I’m the man x 2
Yes I am, yes I am, yes I am
I’m the man, I’m the man, I’m the man

I’m the man
Go ahead and tell everybody what I’m saying y’all
I’m the man
Go ahead and tell everybody what I’m saying y’all

Well you can tell everybody
Yeah you can tell everybody
Go ahead and tell everybody
I’m the man, I’m the man, I’m the man

Aloe Blacc on…

THE MEANING BEHIND THE MAN

It’s the same story I keep telling in all my songs. It’s the story of the underdog hoping for a better moment. [via]

COMING TO THE UK

ON GETTING PLAYED IN THE US VS EUROPE

It’s very difficult to get airplay if you don’t play the radio game, and I’ll just leave it at that. It’s very hush hush and political [in the U.S.]. In Europe they play music based on merit and whether it’s good and not what you can do for them. [via]

I found that last point quite interesting, didn’t know there was that difference in music politics. Also didn’t know that Aloe Blacc used to be a business consultant for Ernst & Young. Perhaps that explains why he has such an entrepreneurial view of the music business.

As an entrepreneur I understand that my songs are my inventions and each one has to have value in order for people to find it worthy of their attention and purchase. As an artist, I recognize that my work is to make everyone else’s playtime more enjoyable, so doing things that are unconventional is very important. I have to get out of my comfort zone in order to make something that helps others slip into theirs. [via]
