The Style: Keri, Garcelle & Eva at 41st Annual NAACP Image Awards

So I was over at Concrete Loop browsing through the red carpet looks from the 41st annual NAACP Image Awards and thought I'd share my three favourite looks.

First of all, I. Love. This. Dress. I just had to blog it. It's too stunning for words and Keri Hilson looks gorgeous in it. I swear if I was her I wouldn't want to take it off.

I have to say I think it's more Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon's sassy attitude rather than the dress that drew me to this picture but I still think it's cute. I truly love the purse though.

Eva Marcille seems to be channeling Grace Kelly in this gown. It is beautiful but in other images I've seen of her wearing it I couldn't help imagine it looking even more gorgeous in a slightly more contrasting colour.

The Video: Sewn From The Soul x Street Etiquette

Whoop whooooop! I salute... applaud... do a celebratory two step to the guys behind Street Etiquette. I love their style, culture and ambition.

They're onto a very good thing with their behind-the-scenes video, Sewn From The Soul, which you can get a peek at below. Love. It.

Given that our US cousins are now celebrating Black History Month, Street Etiquette thought they'd put this together as an ode to the greats.

They said:
"This video is meant to honor individuals from Miles Davis to Dr. Cornel West with a splash of our own Street Etiquette style."

FYI the poem at the start is by "by Brooklyn resident and Street Etiquette friend Joekenneth Museau" and here's some of the images from the shoot.

PS: I should mention that my work buddy did bring Street Etiquette to my attention a few weeks back... Thaaaanks Jos :)

The Art: Melanie LaRocque - Orange, Lemon and Lime Exhibition

Last year my lovely friend Trinigyul (blogger behind Musings of a Trini Girl in London) invited me to an art exhibition by her cousin, Melanie "Shay" LaRocque.

Unfortunately I couldn't make it at the time and felt I really missed out, especially after I saw some of the photos of her work.

Fortunately, last week Trinigyul mentioned LaRocque was back and exhibiting again. Needless to say I was determined not to repeat the same mistake as last year and made sure I would be there.

So Saturday night me and my sister ventured down to the hidden gem that is the Red Gate Gallery on Coldharbour Lane, Brixton and here's my five on it.

  1. It was lovely. I got to speak to LaRocque herself (who I discovered is also a Harlem Loves reader! Yay! *waves*) she explained her current work comes from a very familiar place inspired by experiences that we can all relate to.
  2. Her work is very uplifting. I'm no art critic but I loved the vibrant rich colours she used. They were sooo red, and sooo green, and sooo yellow. They really stood out to me in a refreshing way.
  3. I had a few favourite pieces.  One, LaRocque said was inspired by some kind of carnival in the Virgin Islands and used all three of the aforementioned colours to great effect. Another showed the serene and glowing sillhouette of an expecting mother and the other showed a woman not unlike myself enjoying the delights of shea butter.
  4. LaRocque is a genuinely lovely person. She's warm, friendly, super-talented and didn't bat an eyelid when I introduced myself as Trinigyul's friend before taking half a minute to realise it might also be useful for me to mention my actual name as well.
  5. The Red Gate Gallery is a lovely venue it has a little cafe and seems to  be a little artist hub. It's directly opposite Loughborough Junction tube so if you're in the area do check it out.

LaRocque's exhibition Orange, Lemon and Lime is on till February 18. So get there while you still can or else check out her work on Etsy.

The Quote: Banksy Vs Karate Kid

So Banksy's got a film coming out. It's a documentary called Exit Through The Gift Shop and here's what he had to say about it...

"I guess my ambition was to make a film that would do for graffiti art what Karate Kid did for martial arts, a film that would get every school kid in the world picking up a spray can and having a go.
As it turns out, I think we may have made a film that does for street art what Jaws did for water skiing."

Made me giggle

The Music: Rahel - Hope

Spotted this track by Rahel over on Pinboardblog and I'm loving it. I tell you if this girl keeps coming out with tracks like this she can definitely count me as a supporter.

The Video: Screen On The Green x The Projectionist

This little video really made me smile. Given I was born in Islington and lived there for the majority of my life, I remember the Screen On The Green being the only cinema serving the area for quite a while unless you fancied trekking up to the Odeon on Holloway Road (which I did often).

So I was glad that this little ode to the projectionist and the inner workings of the cinema itself turned out to be quite interesting and really enjoyable to watch.

PS: My car was broken into last week sending everything a bit out of sync so once again I apologise for the lack of posts. Missed ya! H x

The Giggles: Boris Johnson Vs He-Man

So whilst listening to the radio this morning on the way to work, me and my sister heard a clip of our London Mayor Boris Johnson making a speech about bankers...

It all seemed to be going on in the usual manner as he talked about bankers needing to take more responsiblity for their actions till he decided to fling in the line:

"It is time for the masters of the universe to show they can also be the servants of society"

Masters of the universe?

Really Boris? As if taking in million-pound salaries isn't enough, bankers can now enjoy the pleasure of knowing our Mayor thinks that they're Masters of the universe.

My responses to this comment stacked up faster then I could respond till my sister said:

"Sounded like he was eating his Coco Pops in front of He-Man when he wrote that"

Oh my life I died...
